The Unconventional Guide to Pondicherry

How ironic it would be if I say, “wandering leaves us speechless, but it also makes us storytellers”. Pondicherry often called Pondy or Puducherry is capable of bringing the former phrase to life! Bounded by Tamil Nadu, the Union Territory was a French colonial settlement which now is a mosaic of mustard colored- villas, palm trees and an epitome of great architectural works. It is a destination which offers serenity in its absolute sense.

Visiting a place, we have no clue about getting clumsy and might spoil the fun we thought we would have. This even takes the worst turn when we aren’t even a native of that country. Here are a few things which we hope might solve our problem as we plan to visit Pondicherry.

How to Reach Pondicherry

By bus and train, the Union Territory is well connected to neighboring states and districts. The French Heritage of Pondicherry

The name legacy town or French Quarters refers to a section of the city that has been historically preserved. It features buildings and houses from the French Colonial era that are lined in tranquil and shaded streets. The streets of this hamlet are lined with a variety of brightly colored structures. The white town was the name given to this place in the past. This is where the city’s vibe may be found.

Pondicherry’s Culture: An Overview

This town’s culture is a mash-up of several influences. The ethos of this village is embodied in its humility in greeting visitors with loving embraces and treating them as if they were family. The frequently spoken Tamil accented French is one of the colonial town’s oddities. Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam are the official languages. Filter coffee with croissants from South India, with foreigners haggling hard in the local vernacular.

Pondicherry is known for its spiritual culture, which is reflected in the residents’ manner of life. The civilization is a mix of traditional and modern elements. Get rid of preconceptions and look at this city with new eyes. Be prepared for some unexpected twists and turns.

Keep our guard up

  • When going out in the evening, always carry a torch.
  • Carry limited things.
  • Do not listen to the speech of beggars who appear to be innocent.

It is said that health is wealth

Because acclimating to a new place takes time, the Indian climate, food, water, and surroundings may have an impact on our health. The weather is frequently humid and muggy. It is recommended that we bring a high-SPF sunscreen. Avoid spicy foods and drink bottled water. Give the individual serving instructions on the type of food we prefer. Avoid the street food because it is highly hot and may irritate our stomach. Carry a tiny pouch with hand sanitizers and medications. Mosquito repellents should always be on hand.

Clothes to wear

When visiting an area where village chores are performed, it is advisable to dress modestly. Pondicherry’s culture is quite basic and clear, in contrast to Goa’s. Traditional dress is preferred over western attire by the locals.

Wear breathable fabrics to avoid allergic reactions or rashes on our skin. On the streets of Pondicherry, a comfy pair of slippers is a must. When we’re out in the sun, wear caps and sunglasses.
